New Year theater starts with Chekhov’s ‘A Marriage Proposal’

Iran theater starts the new Persian year with Russian author Anton Chekhov’s play ‘A Marriage Proposal’.

Seyyed-Azim Mousavi re-wrote and directed the play with a northern Iranian accent which absorbed large audiences to Tehran’s Sangelaj Theater Hall on March 23.

An official affiliated to Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance attended the opening night and admired the theater production.

Mehdi Shafiee who watched the play with his family members expressed his delight over a warm reception by large audiences of the theater production attending one of the oldest Iranian theater halls.

‘A Marriage Proposal’ is a one-act play by Anton Chekhov, written in 1888-1889 and first performed in 1890.

The play depicts Ivan Vassiliyitch Lomov, a long-time neighbor of Stepan Stepanovitch Chubukov, who has come to propose marriage to Chubukov's 25-year-old daughter, Natalia.
